Effective theory of quadratic degeneracies
We present an effective theory for the Bloch functions of a two-dimensional square lattice near a quadratic degeneracy point. The degeneracy is protected by the symmetries of the crystal, and breaking these symmetries can either open a band gap or split the degeneracy into a pair of linear degeneracies that are continuable to Dirac points. A degeneracy of this type occurs between the second and...
متن کاملBosonic effective action for interacting fermions
We present a bosonic description for systems of interacting fermions. A systematic expansion of the free energy starts with a solution to the lowest order Schwinger-Dyson or gap equation. Part of the phase diagram for the Hubbard model is computed in this framework. We propose a two particle irreducible formulation of an exact renormalization group equation for computations beyond leading order...
متن کاملApplications of quadratic D-forms to generalized quadratic forms
In this paper, we study generalized quadratic forms over a division algebra with involution of the first kind in characteristic two. For this, we associate to every generalized quadratic from a quadratic form on its underlying vector space. It is shown that this form determines the isotropy behavior and the isometry class of generalized quadratic forms.
متن کاملEffective Field Theories, Landau-Migdal Fermi-Liquid Theory and Effective Chiral Lagrangians for Nuclear Matter∗
We reinterpret Landau-Migdal Fermi-liquid theory of nuclear matter as an effective chiral field theory with a Fermi surface. The effective field theory is formulated in terms of a chiral Lagrangian with its mass and coupling parameters scaling a la Brown-Rho and with the LandauMigdal parameters identified as the fixed points of the field theory. We show how this mapping works out for response f...
متن کاملEffective actions for bosonic topological defects.
We consider a gauge field theory which admits p-dimensional topological defects, expanding the equations of motion in powers of the defect thickness. In this way we derive an effective action and effective equation of motion for the defect in terms of the coordinates of the p-dimensional worldsurface defined by the history of the core of the defect.
